Frequently Asked Questions

Cymplifier takes a very different approach to vulnerability management. So you probably have some questions for us. Good chance we already have an answer for you. If not, do not hesitate to contact us: [email protected] of via the contact form below.

About Cymplifier

Cymplifier makes vulnerability management and patching a lot easier. No longer active scanning of networks, but just tell Cymplifier what you have, and Cymplifier will notify you immediately when a vulnerability arises. This way you can patch within minutes or hours when a vulnerability is published as a CVE instead of waiting for a vendor or supplier to notify you.

Yes, Cymplifier is a 100% European company. The owners, management, development, and support are all Dutch. The company is headquartered in the Netherlands, and data is stored in European data centers (Frankfurt).

Vulnerability management

A vulnerability in cybersecurity is a weakness or flaw in a system, software, or network that hackers can exploit to gain unauthorized access or cause harm. It’s like an unlocked door or open window in a house—if it’s not fixed, someone could break in. Vulnerabilities can come from bugs in software, poor security settings, or even human error. Cybercriminals look for these gaps to steal data, install malware, or disrupt services. Regular updates and security checks help find and fix vulnerabilities before they can be used in an attack.

An exploit in cybersecurity is a method or tool used by hackers to take advantage of a vulnerability in a system. It’s like using a lock-pick to open a door that has a weak lock. Once the hacker uses the exploit, they can access, damage, or control the system without permission. Exploits can target software bugs, weak passwords, or misconfigured settings. They are often used to steal data, install malware, or spy on users. That’s why fixing vulnerabilities quickly is important—to stop exploits from working.

The risk of a vulnerability in cybersecurity is the chance that someone will find and use that weakness to cause harm. It’s like the danger of leaving your front door unlocked—someone might break in. The risk depends on how easy the vulnerability is to find, how serious the damage could be, and whether anyone is likely to try. If a vulnerability is not fixed, it could lead to data theft, system crashes, or loss of control. Managing risk means finding and fixing vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them.

To know if you are vulnerable you need to combine a lot of information:

  • What assets do i have (componentents, systems, applications, IoT, OT etc.)
  • Which software versions are running on those assets
  • Check if there are any known vulnerabilites for your assets. Match new CVE’s/EUVD’s to your assets.
  • Patch or update your assets as soon as possible.

Cymplifier assists you in matching (new) vulnerabilities on your assets. When a new risk arises you will be informed immediately.

Active scanning in vulnerability management is a process where security tools actively probe systems, networks, or devices to find weaknesses (vulnerabilities). It works by sending requests or signals to systems—like knocking on doors—to see what’s open, exposed, or misconfigured. An active scanner only works if the scanner can ‘see’ all the systems and systems give an active reply to the scan. Modern systems and applications do NOT reply to these scans. This means you can have a scanner which will not identify vulnerabilities. This is where passive management provides a better (and cheaper) solution.

Cymplifier is not a scanner but is management platform to inform you if a vulnerability has been published which may effect your assets. This far faster than relying on the (mostly weekly or monthly scan).

A CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) is a public ID number given to a specific cybersecurity vulnerability. It’s like a reference code that helps people talk about and track known security problems.

Each CVE entry includes:

  • A unique ID (e.g., CVE-2024-12345)

  • A short description of the vulnerability

  • Details about the affected software or system

CVE records are managed by a non-profit organization and help security teams, software vendors, and users stay informed and fix issues quickly. For example, when a software update says it fixes “CVE-2024-12345,” you know exactly which problem it addresses.

EUVD’s are the European version of a CVE. ENISA started the EUVD initiative to be more independent of the US. An EUVD-id is most of the time directly coupled with a CVE-number.

CWE’s (Common Weakness Enumerations) are a list of common types of security flaws found in software. They describe the cause of vulnerabilities, not the specific problem. For example, “CWE-89: SQL Injection” is a type of coding mistake that can lead to serious attacks. CWEs help developers understand what kinds of weaknesses to avoid when writing code. They are used to improve software security by guiding testing, training, and development. Think of CWEs like a guidebook of common coding errors that could make software unsafe if not fixed properly.

A CVSS score (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) is a number from 0 to 10 that shows how severe a cybersecurity vulnerability is. The higher the score, the more dangerous the vulnerability. It’s like a risk rating—used to help people decide which problems to fix first.

CVSS scores are based on factors like:

  • How easy the flaw is to exploit

  • How much damage it could cause

  • Whether it can be used remotely or needs access

For example, a score of 9.8 means it’s critical and should be fixed quickly, while a score of 3.1 is considered low risk.

You can find CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) in several trusted public databases. Some of the most popular sources include:

  1. NVD (National Vulnerability Database) – https://nvd.nist.gov (Managed by the U.S. government, includes detailed CVE info and CVSS scores.)

  2. CVE.ORG – https://www.cve.org (The official CVE directory, managed by MITRE. Good for searching CVE IDs and summaries.)

Cymplifier takes the effort away from you by checking (new) vulnerabilities for you and matching them to your assets.

Asset Management

In the context of vulnerability management and Cymplifier, an IT asset is any company-owned hardware, software or cloud resource that can be a target of a cyberattack. Effective vulnerability management hinges on a complete and accurate inventory of all IT assets, as you can’t protect what you don’t know you have.

The number of assets which are monitored is based on the subscription you have with Cymplifier. In the Free version you can monitor 3 assets. F.i. your internet-facing appliances and/or software like firewalls.

Cymplifier provides access to all vendors and products listed in the CVE database. If an asset is not found in the database, it can be added manually and as soon as a matching CVE is identified, an alert is automatically triggered. You can register for a free subscription to start searching for your assets in our comprehensive database.

Onboarding / User Management

A user in Cymplifier is a person who can log-in to the applications. In future versions, users can be assigned to have a responsibility for an asset to optimize the process for patch management.

This depends on your organization and how roles are distributed over personnel. We advise beginning with the START subscription and upgrading if more users or assets are needed.

Reporting

Cymplifier is constantly evolving. Reports will be available for system engineers, management, CISO’s and the board.

Yes, with Cymplifier a CISO has the peace of mind that he knows which systems are vulnerable and if corrective measures have been taken. He has the possibility to view the status and can use this information to prioritize, communicate, and escalate when needed.

Pricing

Cymplifier is a subscription based service. You can start for Free to understand the system. Put your firewall in Cymplifier and we will notify you if a vulnerability has been published. Move up to START or BUSINESS if you have more assets to manage and/or more teammembers to onboard.

Yes, FREE is really free. Register and put your perimeter systems or appliances into the system. If something is directly connected to the internet a vulnerability being exploited can be disastrous. Cymplifier exists to boost the digital resilience of organizations. With FREE you can do that with the least amount of effort or costs.
